Modern man swallows his feelings, gets indigestion

It's hard to pack books... I don't know if you'll read all of this but it's so relevant to how people interact and what seems to happen to folks over time. I was just saying the other day that the older I get the more my own peers and elders seem to be going crazy...their minds close and their perceptions of reality grow a sort of crust around the edges closing them off from each other and ongoing self-discovery. They become almost like caricatures of themselves and will defend the opinions that they feel define them to near ruthless measures. It seems perhaps this has something to do with the secrets and true emotions we withhold...withholding and denying for so long to everyone, including ourselves, any shameful thing we've ever felt, turns us into some thing else. We swallow envy or vanity and it turns in our guts to a justified hatred of anything that could expose the truth of our withholdings.
